I know that SO many of you have heard me say “Aloha” or have seen my “Aloha Friday posts”. To me, these posts are generated in so much more than a word. There is a spirit that goes with them… the aloha spirit.
A few years back, my daughter and I were blessed to be able to go to Maui for 6 days. We were homeschooling, and as the “teacher”, we researched prior to the trip and learned so much about the Hawaiian culture and lifestyle. Our trip to Maui was wonderful! We embraced the people outside the resort. They in return embraced us.
We learned how to hula, how to play ukulele, and some Hawaiian history from our cultural teacher, Miley. She was a wonderful lady who shared her heart with us. Then she told us before we left that she was happy to have new “ohana” in her family. We were welcomed in with open arms. We actually met her grandchildren and her children on the beach and enjoyed their family.

A part of my heart was left in Maui. But what I COULD bring home was the “aloha spirit”.
The spirit which is a day in and day out way of life. As one writer states that the literal meaning of aloha is “the presence of breath” or “the breath of life.” It comes from “Alo,” meaning presence, front and face, and “ha,” meaning breath. Aloha is a way of living and treating each other with love and respect. Its deep meaning starts by teaching ourselves to love our own beings first and afterwards to spread the love to others.
According to the old kahunas (priests), being able to live the “Spirit of Aloha” was a way of reaching self-perfection and realization for our own body and soul. Aloha is sending and receiving a positive energy. It’s living in harmony. When you live the “Spirit of Aloha”, you create positive feelings and thoughts, which are never gone. They exist in space, multiply, and spread over to others.
I’m intrigued to see the “Aloha Spirit” being lived out today on the island of Hawaii as the native people protest the building of an 18 story high telescope. This telescope would be the size of a profession football stadium and then higher. The worst part is it would be sitting on their sacred mountain- the Mauna Kea.
This is their “church”. It is the place their ancestors worshiped and are buried.
But, as they protest in the THOUSANDS, they remain with an “aloha spirit”. They have a “law” which states that this protest will be done in the “spirit of aloha” and that there will be no violence. This protest has been going on for almost 40 days now. The corporations who are fighting the Hawaiians are trying to provoke them to anger. But they stay in the “spirit of aloha”. I encourage you to read more of this simply by googling Mauna Kea protest.
But, as for me and the “aloha spirit”, it just goes right back to scripture, “Do unto others as you would have them do to you.” And I just think that we should all stop and take it a bit slower. We need to think about our fellow humans and respect them. Now, I’m all sold out to Jesus, just so you know that up front. But the attitude and the beauty of “aloha” can and is life changing. It is a positive behavior. When you are around positive behavior, it becomes you! Then you instinctively go out and are positive towards others.
